What We Keep on the Counter

The counter is not a showroom. It is a weather report for the family.
This week I left the cutting board out because Meg kept slicing apples between edits. I left the crock of spoons where little hands could reach them. I moved the flowers to the sill because the light was better there, not because the room looked cleaner.
A slow home is not an empty home. It is an edited home. The question is not whether something belongs in a magazine. The question is whether it helps us love each other with less friction.
